Who is Graham Jackson? Product Manager for Technical Backpacks at Thule

Graham Jackson is introduced in the BACKLINE 2020 test magazine as Product Manager Technical Backpacks at Thule Global. He grew up skiing in Colorado, USA, and is an avid skier and ski tourer. His job allows him to pursue this passion around the world. In the interview, he discusses the development and features of ski touring backpacks and the importance of the backpack and airbag segment to Thule.

Jackson describes snow sports as a core focus of the brand. He cites flexibility, low weight and reliability as key reasons for using the Mammut Removable Airbag System 3.0. The removable system can be transferred between compatible backpacks and, according to the interview, weighs 700 grams without the cartridge. He highlights the Thule Upslope collection’s quick access to avalanche equipment, wraparound side pockets and underside helmet attachment for ascents.

Before winter, Jackson recommends checking the backpack, airbag, cartridge and trigger mechanism. He also stresses that an airbag backpack is no guarantee of safety. For him, careful tour planning, complete avalanche equipment and knowing how to use it correctly go hand in hand. Knowledge should be refreshed regularly, for example through an avalanche course or practice with friends.

Thule has a broad product portfolio, from roof racks to backpacks. How important is the backpack and airbag segment for Thule?

Backpacks and airbags are a central focus of our brand, because we always want to make sure that every product we make helps our customers forget what they are carrying and concentrate on enjoying the activity. All Thule products share the same DNA, whether it is a roof rack, a piece of luggage or a technical backpack. Our focus is entirely on developing smart, stylish products that are environmentally friendly, high in quality and at the same time safe and easy to use. Our mission is to help our customers live an active life. Snow sports are a core focus of the Thule brand.

Thule uses the Mammut airbag system in Thule backpacks. Can you tell us why?

There are three main reasons why the Mammut airbag system is a good choice. With the Mammut system you have complete flexibility – the airbag system can be removed when you do not need it, or fitted into other compatible models. The system is a lightweight – at only 700 grams (without the cartridge) it is one of the lightest and most compact systems on the market. And it is absolutely reliable. The pressurised gas cylinder provides reliable stored energy over a period of years and guarantees very high initial pressure so the airbag deploys reliably in extreme situations.

What characterises Thule backpacks?

The Thule Upslope collection stands out for its fast access to avalanche equipment. As mentioned, the packs can be used with or without the Mammut Removable Airbag System 3.0. The body-hugging side pockets allow quick access to the essentials you need often and give a comfortable ride feeling. On the ascent the helmet can be fixed simply and effectively to the underside of the pack, and access to all compartments is intuitive.

Next winter is just around the corner. What do you recommend checking before heading out?

Inspect the whole backpack for possible tears or damage. Check specifically whether the cartridge is pressurised, unpack the airbag, check it for damage and pack it again. Remove the cartridge and then test the trigger, see whether the firing pin works. A backpack with an airbag is not a fully comprehensive insurance policy; before every winter it makes sense to refresh your knowledge, at least with friends or on an avalanche course. Personal safety starts with planning the tour, and of course you have to carry the complete avalanche equipment on every tour – and know how to use it correctly.
