After eight issues of the BACKLINE Backcountry Freeskiing Photo & Story Magazine, we decided to add a comprehensive test of ski touring skis, airbag backpacks, bindings and boots. The dynamic development and incredible diversification of all products in recent years allows everyone to choose gear according to personal preference and individual skills — but it also makes choosing the right setup harder. Equipment has generally become lighter and now meets very specific demands, from multi-day tours and steep couloirs to short ascents close to the resorts.

The choice is vast, and the brands have an answer for every taste. In the right conditions and in the right hands, every product has its strengths — and, conversely, its weaknesses. That is rarely down to a bad product, but rather to the wrong choice or the wrong use.

We hope this magazine helps you find the right equipment for your individual preferences and your skills for the coming winter.

The skis are divided into three test categories: ascent-oriented skis around 80–90 mm, all-rounders around 90–100 mm, and descent-oriented planks of 100 mm and wider. Airbag backpacks were tested up to 25 litres and above 25 litres; boots were split into ascent-oriented models up to 1,250 grams and descent-oriented models above 1,250 grams. For bindings we drew the line between ascent- and descent-oriented models, including brakes, at 500 grams.

Our sincere thanks go to all our testers and to all partners who supported and enabled this comprehensive test. Enjoy browsing and studying the results — we wish you a snowy and safe winter.
