Testing. Analysing. Skiing powder.

In recent years the ski industry has diligently developed its ski touring products further and differentiated them for a wide range of needs. Young or old, heavy or light, male or female, expert or beginner – everyone can find the right equipment for their personal touring preferences. How?

It is quite simple, really. Anyone who finds it hard to assess themselves and does not want to dive into the topic of equipment is well advised to seek advice from specialist retailers or experts. Those who prefer not to hand the subject over will find valuable test results and comparative information on the following pages that make the buying decision easier.

At the end of March 2023 we tested in Gastein with 12 testers and 4 prominent guests in excellent conditions: 90 touring skis, 24 touring poles, 18 airbag backpacks and 23 day packs. In addition, for the second year, we tested 10 different climbing skins.

Every test class is split into sub-classes and into women's, men's and unisex products in order to improve clarity based on the ideal field of use of each product.

We also compiled comparative data on touring bindings, boots, helmets, avalanche safety equipment, crampons and headlamps so that these product categories are easier to survey and to buy from.

The right equipment makes days in the mountains easier and sweeter for everyone. However, there is no equipment that works excellently in all conditions. We recommend ambitious ski tourers to look into a second ski or second boot. Those who are out only sporadically in winter should think twice about how they are likely to use their gear – and be aware that in certain conditions a single set-up will mean a few small compromises in comfort.

We wish everyone a snowy and safe winter 2023/24.
